Under French protection at the time the island did not actively take part in the Greek revolution of 1821 however it supported the revolution financially and excepted refugee’s from their neighbouring Phodes, Psara and the Asian parts of Turkey. This was achieved by a great deal of trade crafts including banks, shipping companies, shipyards and printing houses. In 1860 Syros was the first major trade port of Greece. This helped the residents of Syros to build the most beautiful town in the word. Ermoupolis town.
